Shift Premium Pay

What is shift premium pay?
Shift premium is additional pay provided for working split shifts or evening and night shifts or a split shift.

 

 

Who is eligible to receive shift premium pay?
Employees who have the majority of their scheduled work hours between 6 pm and 6 am or who have a work shift that is split with a minimum of four intervening hours in which they do not work are eligible. Employees may waive shift premium pay.

 

 

How is shift premium pay earned?
Shift premium is paid for the entire daily or weekly shift that qualifies. In addition, employees are entitled to shift premium for all hours worked adjoining that evening or night shift.

 

 

How is shift premium pay applied?
Shift premium may be paid at a monthly rate for full time employees regularly assigned to a qualifying shift. See Shift Premium Rates for more details.  

 

 

Note: Rules and practices may vary between represented and non-represented employees. Check the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement, or talk to the agency’s or institution’s Human Resource staff.
